Message I could notice an increase in performance when I had high-flow cats installed on my car (my main cats were gutted). It was explained to my by Kyle at SGP that the turbulence caused by the gutted cats probably negated any increased flow velocity.

Greg's Super Splits offer another example of this principle, I think. The Super Splits aren't any more "open" than his regular downpipes, but the design prevents turbulence better which allows the air to exit the pipes easier.
